How the euro gold price is calculated
Gold is traded worldwide in US dollars, mainly in London and on COMEX in New York. The euro price is simply the dollar price divided by the EUR/USD rate, currently 1.13. This means the euro gold price can move even when the dollar price does not: a weaker euro pushes the euro price up, while a stronger euro can offset a rising dollar price. All other values are derived from the ounce price. Dividing it by 31.1035 gives the price per gram of fine gold; for bars, coins and jewellery, fineness, weight and the dealer's spread are then added.
Bars, coins and jewellery
Private buyers in Germany mostly choose gold bars or gold coins. Investment gold is exempt from VAT in Germany. Larger bars carry lower premiums per gram, while well-known coins are easy to resell. Jewellery is valued by its fineness: 585 gold (14 carat) is worth about 69.24 EUR per gram in pure metal value. Dealers pay less than this when buying scrap gold.
Tax and buying tips
Gains on physical gold are tax-free after a holding period of more than one year; see gold tax in Germany. Compare buy and sell prices, get several offers when selling, and note that anonymous cash purchases are only possible up to EUR 1,999.99; from EUR 2,000 dealers must identify you under the Money Laundering Act. Reputable dealers weigh and test your gold in front of you, and well-known coins and certified bars are easier to resell later.
