Gold since 1970: key milestones

In 1971 the US ended the convertibility of the dollar into gold at 35 dollars an ounce. In January 1980 gold reached about 850 dollars, a record that stood for decades. After a long slide to around 250 dollars in 1999, gold climbed to just over 1,900 dollars in 2011, passed 2,000 dollars for the first time in 2020 and has set new records since 2022.

Gold in euros

For investors in Germany the euro price matters. It depends on both the dollar price and the exchange rate, which is why the table shows both currencies. See the current gold price per ounce.

Reading the table

The average is the mean of the monthly closes; the change compares year-end closes. All figures are for one troy ounce of pure gold without dealer premium. The gold chart shows candles and indicators, and the forecast page looks ahead.
