What is the gold-silver ratio?
It is the gold price per ounce divided by the silver price per ounce. A ratio of 80 means one ounce of gold buys 80 ounces of silver. The figure is the same in any currency.
How investors use it
A high ratio suggests silver is cheap relative to gold, a low ratio the opposite. Some investors switch between the metals at extremes. In Germany silver usually carries VAT while investment gold does not, so switching costs more than the ratio suggests.
Historical range
Around 1980 the ratio fell below 20 at times; in March 2020 it briefly rose above 100. The statistics above show the one- and five-year averages. See the silver price and all precious metal prices.
