What 999 means
999 stands for at least 99.9 % gold, i.e. 24 carat. Investment bars are usually 999.9. Both exceed the 995/1000 minimum for VAT-free investment bars. The difference between 999 and 999.9 hardly affects the metal value.
Where it is used
Pure gold is found in gold bars and coins such as the Maple Leaf and Philharmonic. It is rarely used for jewellery in Germany because it is very soft.
On bars, purity, weight and maker are stamped; on jewellery look for 999 or 24K. Pure gold has a deep, slightly orange-yellow colour, warmer than 585 or 333 gold, but only a test can confirm the content. In some Asian countries high-carat jewellery is common. Badly damaged, bent or holed coins are often bought only at metal value, similar to scrap, so get several offers before selling.
Selling
The metal value equals the gold price per gram. For 10 g of 24 carat scrap you would get about 1,135.05 EUR against a metal value of 1,182.34 EUR. Bars and coins have their own, often better, buy-back prices. Figures are indicative.
