Bullion coins and historic coins
Bullion coins such as the Krugerrand (3,810.15 EUR), Maple Leaf (3,809.58 EUR), Vienna Philharmonic (3,802.21 EUR), Britannia (3,809.58 EUR), American Eagle (3,846.96 EUR), Kangaroo (3,820.62 EUR) and Panda (3,759.85 EUR) are minted in large numbers and track the gold price closely. Historic coins like the Vreneli (728.44 EUR), 20 Mark (907.80 EUR), ducat (444.08 EUR), Sovereign (918.66 EUR) and 100 Corona (3,770.64 EUR) are mostly traded for their gold content too.
Premiums and dealer spreads
Coins always sell above their metal value (the premium), and dealers buy them back slightly below it. These figures are reference prices derived from the spot price and EUR/USD; actual dealer quotes differ.
VAT-free investment gold
In Germany, gold coins are exempt from VAT if they are at least 900/1000 fine, minted after 1800 and are or were legal tender in their country of origin. See our tax guide.
Compare by price per gram
Divide the sell price by the fine gold content to compare coins fairly. One-ounce coins usually offer the lowest premium per gram; fine gold currently costs about 121.30 EUR per gram.
When selling, ask several dealers and convert each offer into a price per gram of fine gold. Gains on gold held privately for more than one year are tax-free in Germany.
Frequently asked questions
Are gold coins VAT-free in Germany?
Yes, if they qualify as investment gold: at least 900/1000 fine, minted after 1800 and legal tender (now or formerly) in their country of origin.
Which gold coin has the lowest premium?
One-ounce bullion coins such as the Krugerrand or Maple Leaf usually have the lowest premium per gram of fine gold.
Why do buy and sell prices differ?
Dealers sell above and buy below the metal value to cover minting, logistics and their margin. The gap is the spread you pay once per round trip.
